Program on Neuroscience

Pathways involved in neural circuit formation and the regulation of neural connectivity are strongly implicated in autism by genomic and neuroanatomic findings. The Institute’s Program on Neuroscience seeks to understand how genes and molecular pathways that have been implicated in autism affect neural connectivity, cell adhesion, cytoskeletal remodeling, GABAergic innervation, synapse function and cellular integrity.  Better understanding of these pathways, and how they may be altered in autism, can lead to an understanding of the factors underlying difficulties in communication, movement, sensory processing and social interaction. This understanding may also inform strategies to compensate or intervene in ways that may reduce the challenges faced by individuals with autism.

“The intent of the Institute is to foster a collaborative and interdisciplinary environment where findings and hypotheses can be shared and examined across multiple disciplines. The Institute will seek to cooperate with existing institutions as much as possible, in order to expand collaborative research opportunities, share findings, and avoid duplication of research efforts.”

  • “The soul must be loved as it is.”

    Jamie Burke
  • “Autism awareness can’t stop with a list of what makes people with autism different from us. Because what is essential is the constant awareness of what makes us the same.”

    John P. Hussman, Ph.D., Director
  • “And now here is my secret, a very simple secret: It is only with the heart that one can see rightly; what is essential is invisible to the eye.”

    The Little Prince

    Antoine de Saint-Exupéry
  • “We agree with the view that presuming competence is the least dangerous assumption.”

    John P. Hussman, Ph.D., Director
  • “Autism is not disability.”

    Jamie Burke
  • “We are just like you, with the same desires, and just need help to be typical members of society.”

    Sue Rubin
  • “In the end, the best argument for inclusion is the simplest. It’s the one we know by heart – that all of us are created equal.”

    John P. Hussman, Ph.D., Director
